Good Sunburn Remedies

When it comes to finding good sunburn remedies, there a number of options open for the sunburn sufferer. The first thing you need to do is to determine the extent of your burn. How much of your total body area does it cover? Is it mostly just a reddening of the skin (first degree) or does it look deep and have accompanying blistering (second degree)?

If just a first-degree burn, you should be able to treat it with sunburn remedies on your own at home. There are any number of over-the-counter (OTC) products that you can get, if this is the route you want to take. Just be careful to choose one that does not have alcohol in it, which will further dry out the injured area and can cause cracking or further irritation to the area. Try to find something that has aloe vera in it. Aloe vera has been in use for centuries as a treatment for burns and has compounds in it that promote healing while keeping the healing tissue moist and hydrated.

There are several proven sunspot remedies that you can use at home that will provide a considerable amount of relief. The first is to take several cool baths that contain powdered colloidal oatmeal. The oatmeal is a natural soothing agent that takes away the heat caused by the sunburn and keeps the skin moist.

Another equally natural sunburn remedy lives right inside your refrigerator. If you have cucumbers, you can slice them thinly and place them right over the worst of the affected area. Likewise, you can juice the cucumber and dab or spray the juice on your sunburn as often as needed between baths.

Surprisingly, apple cider vinegar, like aloe vera, is a very old-fashioned member of the family of sunspot remedies. Just make a solution of one part vinegar to two parts water. Keep the mixture in a spray bottle that produces a fine mist and spray it over the burn as often as needed. By keeping this mixture chilled, you will help keep the skin moisturized, and some users have reported that their skin has not peeled or scarred after using this. Lastly, of course, is the old standby of aloe vera juice. It can be purchased in a few different forms like gel (just make sure there's no alcohol in it). It can be purchased in a food-grade juice at health food stores that can be drunk as well as applied topically to the burn area. Like the cider mixture, aloe vera juice can be placed in a fine mister and chilled for an incredibly effective sunburn remedy.

One last consideration among sunspot remedies is to keep hydrated by drinking as much water as you comfortably can while healing. Not just the skin is dried out when you get a sunburn --- your whole body is affected, and you will need to take into account the extra moisture your body will need as it works to repair your skin.

If you have a second-degree burn and/or it covers a considerable portion of your body, you should consider seeking medical attention immediately. Your physician can prescribe appropriate medicines to repair the damage to your skin and something to aid with the discomfort you feel until you heal.
