How To Treat A Burn

Knowing how to treat a burn is very important for everyone to know in case there is ever an accident. Burns are very serious and need to be treated promptly and correctly. Not only are burns painful, but they destroy the skin leaving a great entry for infection into the body. Skin not only protects our bodies, but it also helps to retain and release our body heat. Burns can start out looking just ugly and being painful, but what they can turn into if not cared for properly could cause major complications. It's important to treat your burns properly, quickly, and effectively.

The first step to remember when treating a burn is you need to reverse the burning process. If it's burning you will want to cool it down. You can do that by running cool water over top of the burn for several minutes. This may give you immediate relief and it may hurt too much when you stop the water. You can keep it under there for a long time.

If the burn covers a large area, such as a whole arm or leg, call 911 immediately. You will also need to call for help if it's on your face, hands, feet, or genitalia area. You are going to need more help with the burn then you can do on your own. Leave it to the professionals they know exactly how to treat a scald. If you do call them, you can keep your burn under water till they get there. Most people don't realize that even though they are painful, they can cause dizziness, weakness, fever, chills, shivering, cold sweats, and even confusion. Don't take getting burned lightly. Always know how to treat a burn.

Examine the areas for blackened skin, bubbles, blisters, or skin coming off. If there is any blackened skin, then the damage could be a lot deeper than what you see. It's important to look over the area to know how to treat a burn, once you know how burned the area is.

If it is a mild burn and there is no charring or blackened skin you may want to try an over the counter topical burn ointment or spray to reduce your pain. Items containing aloe Vera are great in reducing pain, as well as treating the area. Aloe Vera has an antiseptic affect, with disinfectant capabilities. It can destroy any bacteria, viruses, and fungi that could create an awful infection. It will also nourish your skin and help the healing of your burn. Aloe Vera is commonly used for sunburns, for this reason.

After you have your burns treated, you will need to allow them to heal by wearing loose clothing. Cottons are the best type of material to wear when you have a burn. This will allow more air to the area, and assist with the healing process.
