Burns and Sunburn,

Similar Effects

There are mainly two types of burns that people suffer from: chemical burns, fire burns and sunburn. Many people do not realize that the two burns produce much similar effects which means that you can use some of the same treatments to help take care of the burn symptoms. Burn care is something that you should take seriously as if you administer the wrong treatment you can make the burn much worse.

When a person gets burned, whether it is sunburn, chemical burn or any other type of burn, the skin is destroyed. Your skin helps to keep the temperature of your body regulated as well as keep in the right amount of fluids to keep your body functioning properly. It also helps to protect you from getting infections so it is important to take care of burns as soon as they happen to minimize the risk of infection.

With minor burns and sunburn you will notice that the skin will be red and tender to the touch. Depending on the severity of the minor burn and the sunburn, you may or may not experience water blisters as the skin tries to lower its temperature . It is important to not pop the blisters as it can cause serious infections on the burn area. Many people still believe the old wives tales that you need to cover the burn with butter or an ointment or even ice but this will do more damage then good as it can smother the burn or cool the area too fast.

Many times the skin on the area of burns and sunburn will peel. There is not much you can do about this. As the skin heals the dead skin will start to peel away only to show the new skin that has grown underneath the burn. The new skin will be a brighter pink and it will be very tender as it will not be calloused. It is important to protect the area with new skin to help lesson the chances of damaging the new skin. Vitamin E is good to help burns and lesson the chances of scars so you may want to get some vitamin E oil to apply to the area.

If you are looking for something to keep on hand in the event that someone suffers a burn or sunburn is an aloe plant. There are plenty of Aloe Vera gel products that can be purchased or if you have the actual plant you can use the clear gel inside of the plant and apply it directly to the burned area. It will help to relieve the pain as well as aid in the healing process.

If you or someone you know has suffered with a burn then it is important to assess the area and apply cold water immediately. If the burn seems sever then you need to seek medical treatment as quickly as possible. Never underestimate the severity of a burn. Be sure to start home treatment as soon as possible to lesson the chances of an infection or permanent skin damage. Top
