3rd Degree Burns Recovery

How Should 3rd Degree Burns Be Treated?

Third-degree burns are very serious burns indeed. These are not burns you can simply treat with home remedy applications like aloe vera gel. Unlike first or sometimes even second degree burns (which can usually be treated with home remedies like aloe vera gel) , third-degree burns can be life-threatening and require immediate medical treatment when they happen.

When do 3rd degree burns occur?

Third-degree burns occur when layers of the skin -- specifically, the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis -- have been injured or even destroyed by the burn. These types of burns can often send people into shock, which is why you need to seek immediate medical attention when they occur.

First aid for 3rd degree burns

There is no "first aid" for third-degree burns other than covering the area with cool and moist sterile cloth or gauze. You should NOT apply any ointments, remove clothing from over the burned area, or do anything else to disturb the burned area. This is something for trained medical personnel to deal with. DO summon professional medical help by calling 911 as soon as possible. Immediate treatment is absolutely necessary. Help the person who has suffered the burn avoid going into shock by covering him or her with a blanket and elevating the feet. You should monitor the person's vital signs such as pulse and breathing until professional medical help has arrived.

True Story:

3rd-degree-burns-survivor.com is the history of a Gasoline Burn, the author of which was a victim in 1981. Pete Rumball suffered from deep burns with full thickness of the skin on 50 % of the surface of his body, as well as considerable second degree burns.

He describes his treatment of 3 months in the Burns Ward, followed of his convalescence of 12 months at the house. The outline of the different surgical procedures and the photos of his scars after 30 years are included. Opened in a new window.

When are aloe vera gel or other topical ointments suitable for burns?

Aloe vera gel and other soothing ointments are suitable for burns when the burns have not broken the skin. Therefore, first and sometimes second-degree burns (those with blistering but where the skin has not been broken) can greatly benefit from these types of treatments. When you clean an area that has been burned, take care NOT to break the skin or pop blisters that have formed. The skin is one of the body's natural protectors from infection, and breaking through it by popping blisters or doing something similar only encourages infection to happen. It can also slow the healing process. This book could be useful for the recovery: Coping with Physical Loss and Disability: A Workbook (New Horizons in Therapy). This one can be useful too: Severe Burns: A Family Guide to Medical and Emotional Recovery (A Johns Hopkins Press Health Book).

One very common type of burn, for example, is a sunburn. Of course, we all know by now that we should wear sunscreen when we are out in the sun, but in the event you do get a sunburn, taking a cool shower, patting yourself dry with a towel (NOT rubbing, which can irritate and even break the skin) and then applying a soothing burn ointment or application like aloe vera gel is a great way to start the healing process. Just make sure the aloe vera gel you use has no alcohol in it and is 100% pure comic to avoid further irritation.

For a good knowledge of the aloe vera, read "Skin Care and Aloe Vera: The Naked Truth", by Yulia Berry.

So again, remember that if 3rd degree burns are suffered, you shouldn't even touch it if it's covered by cloth that has "melted into" the wound. However, if the wound is uncovered, cover it with a clean moist sterile cloth or gauze so as to avoid getting debris in it. DON'T ever attempt to clean out a third-degree wound yourself, without medical intervention. Top.
